MishMash and the race war

Not too long ago,MishMash came under furious fire and believe it or not, we got a glimpse of the race card being thrown in. While Ugandans by nature exercise tribalism to perfection, racism is not and has never been part of the rant food chain until that article and social network bicker that has since been deleted for PR and abuse purposes. Before you think that I’m here to take sides, kindly stop reading this post and go back to your porn (C’mon we all know what the internet was invented for).
MishMash
This opinion is partly personal and objective. The first time my cousin and I walked into Mishmash, not only did we make a friend among the staff members, we were taken care of and waited on just like any other customer who walked through the door. For first impression, they scored a solid 10 and subsequently according to my foursquare account, I’ve been there 7 times in the last month. So it came as a shock to me when native Ugandans were heating up the interwebs about how racist the staff and owners were by catering to Caucasian customers better than Ugandans. @_@!!!
To be fair, Ugandans think that they have seen the brunt of what racism can be mainly because they spend too much time watching African-American movies but I’ll tell you from experience that MishMash doesn’t fall into that category. Infact the only thing that they can be accused of is their staggering prices and the bland menu (constructive criticism). But racism? The staff being native is a given however the art work they display and sell belong to Ugandan artists that; as we all know have a hard time in this ‘no opportunity‘ country. Infact you should thank Adam and Genevieve for taking initiative and reviving art that is very much a part of our heritage as Africans that we seem to have deliberately ignored in favour of science and desk jobs.
Granted when you walk in, the greater percentile of customers are foreigners but that shouldn’t hinder any adult who has come to eat, have their drinks and enjoy themselves. I believe each and everyone of us has experienced worse treatment at a Ugandan run establishment but why not scream the same thing from then? I doubt it had anything to do with race.
